Tang nights, neon dynasty
The city's signature evening, walked in the right order
Xi'an after dark does something no other Chinese city attempts: it replays its own dynasty in neon. The order matters — fountain first for the frame, then the pedestrian axis while your legs last, and the indoor option only if the cold bites.
Stop 1 · Temple
Time your arrival to the North Square fountain (shows run early evening and again around 21:00). Watch the pagoda behind the water, not the water — 1,300 years of silhouette vs. plumbing.
Stop 2 · Street
Walk south ten minutes into the lit axis of Datang Everbright City. The crowd is the show: Tang-costumed photoshoots, choirs, the roly-poly dancer. Go with it; the displays peak after 19:00.
Stop 3 · Attraction
If the cold bites, Chang'an Twelve Hours is an indoor Tang street-in-a-box — a mall in cosplay as the 8th century. Honest fun once you know what it is; book ahead or expect queues.
Stop 4 · Park
Legs permitting, the last kilometer south to Tang Paradise glows quieter — lit gardens instead of performances. Otherwise turn back north and end on the second fountain show with the crowd.
