VISITXIAN

The Terracotta Army's Pit 2 exhibition hall closed on 11 March 2026 for a full upgrade and reopened to the public on 1 October 2026, in time for National Day.

What changed:

  • Ten narrative units — from the pit's excavation history and its timber architecture to how the military formation was actually arrayed. The hall is the largest of the three pit exhibitions and now works as the site's core interpretive window, not just a viewing gallery.
  • Two visiting routes. The north line is the deep-dive: academic interpretation, artifact detail and research results, built for slow looking and study visits. The south line is the quick pass for general visitors moving on to Pit 1 and the exhibition hall.
  • The idea level shifted — from "viewing the warriors" (看俑) to "reading the formation" (读阵): the display now explains the army as a system — who stood where, why the mixed units of cavalry, archers and chariots were deployed as they were.
  • The upgrade rebuilt the display environment, protective systems, exhibition hardware, lighting and wayfinding end to end.

The 2025–26 excavation finds — the rare general figurine and the two ceremonial chariots — remain the standout discoveries behind the new interpretation; work continues in view of visitors.

If you're visiting: budget more time for Pit 2 than older guides suggest. Take the north line if your interest is genuine; the south line if you're pacing a half-day. The visiting strategy on our Terracotta Army page has been updated accordingly.
