Hospitals in Xi'an with English service: where to go, what it costs

If you need a doctor in Xi'an and English matters, three doors work. For planned care — and for anything where you want the whole system to feel familiar — the Xi'an International Medical Center (西安国际医学中心医院) is the city's purpose-built answer: JCI-accredited, opened 2019, with a dedicated International Department used to foreign patients and a Metro Line 6 station connected by underground walkway.

For emergencies, the door with the best reported English is the International Department of Xi'an Gaoxin Hospital (+86-29-8833-0088). And if you need the deepest medical bench in the region — complex surgery, transplants, anything serious — Xijing Hospital is a national top-ten tertiary hospital that runs an international ward on floors 5-6 of its main building.

Xi'an International Medical Center (西安国际医学中心医院) — No.777 Xitai Road, High-Tech Zone. A private Grade-3A campus of 11 specialty hospitals, JCI-certified, and a Mayo Clinic Care Network member — its doctors can consult Mayo specialists on complex cases. The International Department arranges English-speaking coordination, appointments and interpreter support; third-party booking services also handle insurance verification if you want a concierge layer. Getting there is genuinely easy: Metro Line 6 stops at the station named for the hospital, with an underground walkway to the building — for anything non-critical this beats an ambulance in traffic. From the airport it's about 40 minutes by taxi.

Xi'an Gaoxin Hospital International Department (西安高新医院国际部) — 16 Tuanjie Road, High-Tech Zone, +86-29-8833-0088. Part of the same International Medical Group; consistently reported as the best English support in the city. Average waits around an hour; straightforward cases (food poisoning is the classic visitor example) have been treated for a reported $30-80. Its pharmacy counter (+86-29-8833-0120) is the most foreigner-friendly place to fill a prescription. The hospital maintains an English website (en.gxyy.net).

Xijing Hospital international ward (西京医院国际病区) — No.169 Changle West Road, Xincheng District; Metro Line 1 to Xinsi Road, Exit A. Xijing is the Air Force Medical University's flagship — over 4,000 beds, national top-ten standing, exceptional in GI and hepatobiliary surgery, cardiac surgery, transplants and orthopedics. The international ward (typically floors 5-6 of the main building) has English- and Arabic-speaking coordinators who handle registration, interpretation and case management, and can arrange record translation. Booking: message the hospital's WeChat account (西京医院) — allow 2-5 business days — or walk in Mon-Fri with your passport and any imaging discs you have. The general hotline is 029-84774114. Self-pay quotes for major procedures here (from medical-booking services, treat as estimates): knee or hip replacement $6,000-10,000, cardiac bypass $10,000-15,000.

If the international options are far away or full, Xi'an's public giants are excellent medicine with minimal hand-holding. The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University (西安交通大学第一附属医院, 277 Yanta West Road) runs the city's largest public ER and a growing international service desk that accepts walk-in foreign patients — it's the standard fallback when Xijing's waits stretch. Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital (陕西省人民医院, 256 Youyi East Road) needs no appointment for outpatient care and has English signage in the major departments.

The workflow is the same everywhere and knowing it halves the stress: register (挂号, guàhào) at the desk or machine with your passport, pay the registration fee, see the doctor, pay for any tests before taking them, then pay for medication before collecting it. Staff outside international departments rarely speak English — have your hotel write your symptoms in Chinese, or lean on your translation apps.

Timing matters more than charm: Monday mornings are the registration peak, and 2-4 PM is the doctor shift change — aim for mid-morning. The "Xi'an Health" (西安健康) WeChat mini-program shows real-time ER wait times at major hospitals (setting up WeChat needs connectivity sorted first).

For planned surgery, quoted all-in packages at Xijing (surgeon fees + hospital stay, implants extra) include knee/hip replacement at $6,000-10,000 and cardiac bypass at $10,000-15,000 — a fraction of Western prices, and the reason medical travelers exist. Call 120 for an ambulance. Operators speak Mandarin; the protocol that works is to say "English" clearly and ask to be transferred toward the hospitals with English support — Gaoxin's International Department and the Jiaotong University hospital ER are the names to request. For police help with a medical situation, dial 110 and say yīngyǔ yīliáo (英语医疗, "English medical"). Shaanxi's CDC hotline is 12320 (Mandarin only).

Keep every receipt and ask for the official invoice (发票, fāpiào) plus an itemized bill; international departments will produce English documentation for your insurer, and Xijing's international ward can translate records.
