Words you'll actually hear: Shaanxi dialect cards
The dialect you'll overhear at markets and noodle stalls is not textbook Mandarin. These are the words worth recognizing — each with the Putonghua equivalent as your reference line. Learn one (嫽咋咧) and a noodle-stall owner will light up.

Everyone in tourism and transport speaks standard Mandarin — your Mandarin phrasebook and a translation app are what you'll actually reach for. The dialect is ambient culture: the sound of a specific place with a long memory. The full story of the language — its Tang pedigree (with an honest caveat), where you'll hear it, Qinqiang opera — is in the article.
These cards carry no audio on purpose: text-to-speech has no Shaanxi-hua voice, and a Putonghua reading of dialect words would be fake audio. Real recordings will be added when they're ready.
