Online shopping in Xi'an: Taobao, JD and the hotel-delivery trick
Everything you forgot, everything the cold snap demands, everything worth taking home — China's shopping apps have it at local prices. How to register Taobao as a foreigner, which platform to pick, why your hotel front desk is the delivery address that works, and how returns happen.

Registering as a foreigner
Taobao is the one that officially wants you: registration accepts an overseas mobile number and walks through identity verification with your passport. The app's language is Chinese, but the steps are icons and SMS codes more than prose, and machine-photo-translation gets you the rest of the way.
JD.com and Pinduoduo assume a mainland number; if you have a Chinese travel SIM, all three behave identically. Payment across all of them runs through Alipay or WeChat Pay with your linked international card — the same wallet you already use for food and taxis.
Choosing a platform
Three instincts cover 95% of needs. JD self-operated (京东自营 — look for the badge) is the trust option: genuine goods, next-day delivery to urban Xi'an, no haggling culture. Taobao/Tmall is the everything store — from hiking poles to a warmer jacket at a third of airport prices. Pinduoduo is the price floor, best for simple goods where authenticity hardly matters (slippers, a kettle, phone cables).
On Taobao, prefer Tmall shops (天猫 badge) or stores with high sales counts and 4.8+ ratings when the product matters. Counterfeits are rare on JD self-run and Tmall-flagship goods, real on random Taobao C-stores — the same judgment you'd apply anywhere.
Delivery to a hotel or apartment
Couriers in China do not leave packages on doorsteps; they deliver to hands, front desks, or pickup stations. For travelers this is a feature: ship to your hotel's Chinese address, put your name and room number in the delivery notes, and the front desk signs for it. No tip, no ceremony.
In an apartment, the parcel usually lands at the compound's Cainiao station (菜鸟驿站) and you get an SMS with a pickup code — hand the code to the guard or scan it yourself at the shelf.
Returns and the carry-home math
Returns are frictionless by law on most categories: 7-day no-reason returns (七天无理由退货) mean you tap 'return', choose a reason, and a courier collects the box from your address, often free. Refunds land back in the wallet you paid from.
The planning rule that matters for visitors: order on day one of a ten-day trip, not day eight. 'Next-day' still costs a day, and the one thing you can't return is time.
Questions, answered
Can I use these apps without reading Chinese?
Practically, yes — with your phone's camera translation pointed at the screen. The flows are icon-driven: search box, cart, pay button. Product listings are the genuinely hard part; translation apps handle them well enough.
Will they deliver to a hotel?
Yes, universally. Use the hotel's Chinese address, add your name and room number in the notes field. This is completely routine — front desks handle package flow all day.
Are prices higher for foreigners?
No. Apps price identically for everyone. The only 'foreigner tax' is not knowing which shops are trustworthy — which is what the Tmall badge and rating counts solve.
Can I get a refund to a foreign card?
Refunds go back into Alipay/WeChat Pay, and from there to your linked card on request. It works; it can take several business days end to end.
