Your First Night in Xi'an: the landing-day playbook
Landed, checked in, slightly fried? This is the evening that resets you: no tickets, no queues, no buses — just the old city doing what it does best at dusk. One gate, one dinner, one tower. If you only have one working evening before the real sightseeing starts, spend it here.
South Gate at dusk → dinner in the Muslim Quarter → the Bell Tower lit up. All inside the wall, all walkable, ¥120–250 covers dinner for two with change. It's the orientation walk and the best meal of your arrival day in one loop — and it puts the city's geography in your legs before tomorrow's Terracotta Army logistics.
Day 1
South Gate (永宁门) at dusk: the free show before the paid one. Gate square, flags, moat reflections. Save the wall climb for a morning with full legs.
Walk 8 minutes north through the underpass.
The Quarter for dinner — graze roujiamo, biangbiang noodles, bingfeng soda. One lane off the main strip and the food improves. ¥40–80 per person.
Walk 6 minutes south to the Bell Tower.
The Bell Tower lit up — the first-night photo from the underpass windows. Geography lesson complete; the whole old city is now walkable in your head.
Done — walk or one metro stop home.
